What you missed when you left the Frightened Rabbit show early — an email to a friend
Last night at Southpaw I caught Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit [Myspace / Insound] live for the second time (last time was at Pianos, which I posted about here). These guys are my favorite band to see live lately, and quite possibly my favorite band overall.
A friend met up with me but had to leave early, just as the band was really getting going, unfortunately. So, being incredibly kind, I thought he’d appreciate a write-up of what went down after he left— which I’ll share with you now in lieu of any kind of actual linear, logical description (see jessismusic for that).

Subject: what you missed
ok. after you left:
— they frickin covered “fake empire” by the national!!! which, as you may recall, is one of my favorite songs of all time & it was very beautiful. they didnt play the whole thing, just a little & then launched into “backwards walk,” oh maaaan
—so maybe 3 songs after you left i took a bathroom break, but when i came back up i didnt think it’d be worth it to make my way back to our previous spot, so i chilled out against the bar. it was there, during FR’s encore of “poke” [video from a past show here] that i met the most annoying dude in the whole world. scott was all alone on stage with his guitar, and the entire venue was so very quiet— “you coulda heard a pin drop” type quiet— EXCEPT…! goddamn, this GUY— fricking talked to me through the whole thing. i couldnt tell if maybe he was wasted, or? just stupid? “have you seen these guys before??” YUP, HAVE. “i can’t understand a damn word he’s saying.” WELL YOU HAVE TO LISTEN, i said. he offered to buy me a drink and i said no thank you and then raaaaan into the crowd as soon as he turned around to pay. (i am a magnet for the most obscene idiots, all the time, every time. i wish someone had been there to witness.)
—encore song 2 of 2 was “keep yourself warm” [listen here], another favorite, but then again they all are. it’s too bad you couldnt stay because during this song, the guys from oxford collapse came back up, and it was apparent that both bands had gotten to be great friends while on tour— it was that kind of energy— everybody seemed so downright happy & it made it all the more fun to watch. also, i’m actually pretty convinced oxford collapse makes a better back-up band for FR than a band on its own.
p.s. i bought a frightened rabbit t-shirt with pink unicorns on it !
