Dr. Steve Brule is nothing less than a hero

My pal Ray introduced me to Adult Swim’s uncomfortably hilarious sketch comedy program Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!, and I am hooked. Ray’s favorite reoccurring skit is the Spagett series, while I on the other hand have become pretty obsessed with the character Dr. Steve Brule, played by John C. Reilly.

What, you ask, is classically-trained John C. Reilly doing on a silly low-brow sketch comedy show? According to this interview, he offered his comedic services to Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim after doing voice work for Tom Goes to the Mayor. Since then, a half-dozen magical episodes have featured Reilly as the hilariously awkward Brule.

One of his reoccurring segments — Last Resort Fighting — teaches viewers self-defense techniques. Check out this clip in which Dr. Steve teaches us how to kill attackers with kindness.



Dr. Steve Brule also appears regularly on Jan and Wayne Skylar’s “Only Married News Team” sketch, providing expert commentary on a number of topics. This next clip — in which Brule educates viewers about fruits and vegetables — is my all-time favorite.



I’d seriously be embarrassed to admit the number of times I’ve watched that one. Not that I’ve counted. But at this point I am pretty positive that’s no squash.

That’s my viewing method of choice also, given that (1) we never got around to ordering cable, and (2) the internet makes it super-easy to watch the same couple of Steve Brule clips over & over all the livelong day.
