Garden in Transit flower taxis = total day brighteners

More & more often lately I spy yellow NYC cabs with bright, fat flower patterns painted on the hoods (and sometimes trunks and roofs too), and it always brightens my day a little to see them.

Yesterday I found out that, besides them being total day-brighteners in their own right, there’s a back story to them that’s pretty heartwarming too. These paint jobs are being done as part of the NYC Garden in Transit public art, education, and creative therapy project. Through it, more than 23,000 participants (90% of which are/were children from NYC schools and hospitals) painted 80,000+ flowers on 750,000 square feet of adhesive panels featured on taxis citywide.

Seeing them will cheer me up on drab winter days even more now. :)
