Movies I rented recently, in the order that I liked them
Volver- This one is the whole package — moving and tragic but also hilarious and endearing. I really don’t want to give away any more than that. Stop whining about having to read captions and see it.
Sherrybaby- Really good – gritty and unapologetically real. Kind of tore at my soul a little. Also I’m convinced my girlcrush on Maggie Gyllenhaal is never going to end.
Factory Girl- You know what I think is neat? When a movie gets me empathizing and really rooting for a person who, in real life, would probably annoy the hell out of me.
Transamerica- Solidly good. I don’t understand what Felicity Huffman is still doing on Desperate Housewives when she could be playing intense/interesting roles like this.
Walk the Line- I put off seeing this because my ex told me June and Johnny reminded him of us. I think he’s flattering himself. I didn’t like the way this one ended, but I liked everything else up to that point.
Black Snake Moan- Unique premise, insanely good acting, but—- I don’t know, the chained up in her underwear thing? He cares sooo much about this girl’s well-being but can’t loan her a pair of sweatpants? That detail was a little distracting for me.
Blades of Glory- Oh Will Ferrell, you’re always so hilarious until it’s time to focus on an actual plot. I laughed uncontrollably through the first half; I snored through the second.
Fur - An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus- I don’t mind weird; I’m usually pretty down with weird. Nicole Kidman’s whispery-ness annoys me sometimes, though. My favorite part of this was all the cool stuff in furry dude’s apartment.
Evening- What the hell was this supposed to be. Bad? Was it supposed to just be bad? Because I don’t understand how you can get so many incredible actresses together and end up with this moronic of an end product.
Fracture- This was like a too-long episode of Law & Order, only way less interesting. The only redeeming scene was when Ryan Gosling carried a heavy box out of his garage wearing a tight t-shirt.
Reno 911! - Miami- The TV show is funny. The movie is not.
You, Me and Dupree- WAY too long, and maybe the reason Owen Wilson considered offing himself.
